I have a very old Washburn parlor guitar. It looks like a 122, but has tiger striped maple back an sides, stained to a medium walnut color. It is quite striking. The back is broken in several pieces, and I have all of the pieces with the exception of one the size of a pencil eraser. I was thinking about taking the back off, gluing it all back together and getting it flat, and putting it back on. Regarding the missing piece, I was thinking of shaving a piece of the tiger maple from inside the back, filling the hole and gluing a patch made from the piece I shave to fill the hole from the visible side. I was also thinking of putting a couple of cleats on the inside to keep it stable. Am I over thinking this? Does anyone have a better idea how to do this? Attachment: WIN_20131221_120750.JPG

Thanks, I think that is the only way I'll get it good and sturdy, and flat. The stain seems really close to the surface, so I don't want to sand much for fear of hitting the stain. The back has a nice aged finish and don't want to change that. I thought when it is all done I'd go over with a thin (1#) shellac, a couple of times, just to seal the glued pieces. GS |
